Sidney Lynn Hennessey, 91, passed away peacefully on December 28, 2024. She was a loving mother, daughter, “Grandy,” and friend. Born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, Sidney made Tuscaloosa, Alabama, her home for more than 55 years before moving to Montgomery to be closer to family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Allen Knopf Hudson and Naoma Stockhoff Hudson; her son, John Duke Hennessey; and her former husband, Lawrence “Dude” Hennessey.
Survivors include her daughters, Haviland (John Blue) Smith of Montgomery and Maggie (Michael Nees) Hennessey-Nees of Rehoboth, Massachusetts; and grandchildren Jessica and Ginnie Blue Smith, and Madeline, Hudson, and Lily Nees.
Sidney attended Atherton High School in Louisville and graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1956. She later earned a Master of Arts degree from the University of Alabama in 1985. She spent many years working in the Department of Residential Life at the University of Alabama and took great pride in being part of the UA family, which included students, administrators, coaches, and staff. Throughout her life, she was involved in various professional and community organizations, including Canterbury Episcopal Church in Tuscaloosa, the League of Women Voters, and the Public Relations Society of Alabama.
Sidney was never idle and loved working in her beautiful yard after retirement. She will be fondly remembered for keeping the U.S. Postal Service in business with her steady stream of heartfelt personal notes, photos, news articles, consumer tips, and recipes sent to family and friends.
A private memorial service will be held at the Church of the Holy Comforter in Montgomery, Alabama.
