Sharron Huckabee Smith – loving mother, devoted wife – completed her earthly walk on Wednesday, October 2, 2024 – after an almost two-year valiant battle against Glioblastoma brain cancer. She died peacefully at her home surrounded by family and friends in Montgomery, Alabama.
She was born September 20, 1949, in Thomasville, Alabama and was a native of Marengo County, Alabama. She graduated from Sweet Water High School in 1967. She started her journalism career as a correspondent with the Mobile Press Register in 1984. In 1988, she joined the Clanton Advertiser, a member of Boone Newspaper group, where she worked as a staff writer and wrote a southern gospel music column. She was promoted to Classified Advertising Director and began training classified sales and service representatives. She transferred to the Newnan Times Herald in Newnan, GA before advancing to Classified News Manager. In 2004, she was named General Manager of the South-Central Alabama Classified Marketplace – the classified sales and service center for The Brewton Standard and Escambia Advertiser, The Andalusia Star-News and the Extra, The Atmore Advance, The Butler County News, The Greenville Advocate and Butler Express, The Lowndes Signal, The Luverne Journal and Bonus Express, and The Troy Messenger. She retired in 2013.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd McClinton “Mack” Huckabee and Frances Virginia “Jean” Orso Huckabee; brother, Phillip Franklin Huckabee; grandson, Travis Christopher Saferite; and granddaughter, Lila Michelle McClure.
She is survived by her husband, Gene Smith; brother, Michael Huckabee; sister, Debbie Criswell (Lynn); brother Anthony “Tony” Huckabee (Joyce); sister-in-law, Tina Richardson Huckabee; son, Ronald Wesley McClure (Odessa); daughter, Amanda Walker (Justin); stepdaughter, Christy Smith; grandchildren, Morgan Baker (Tatyana), Michaela McClure, Whitney Walden (Wesley), Miranda Murphy (Evans), Melissa Gamble (Trevor), McCay Walker, and McKenzie Walker; 13 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of treasured friends from her childhood days in Marengo County to those most recently near and dear to her in Montgomery and beyond.
Sharron was an active member of St. James Methodist Church. She was involved in many church activities and ministries. She served and volunteered with various civic organizations, including the Alabama Chapter of Business and Professional Women and the Wynlakes Women’s Club. She was a strong woman, and a delicate lady.
Honorary pallbearers are Jud Horne, Mike Stover, Gary Taunton, Richard Dean, Craig McNamara, Alva Lambert, James “Buddy” Vinson, Randy Helms, Sean Sabel, and Brian Sherwood.
