Ronald Ward Dowling (Ron) of Montgomery, Alabama passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday evening, December 6, 2023. Ron is survived by his wife Dotty; his 3 children Leigh (Randy), Libby (Chad) and Britt (Angela); his sister, Georgiann (Ray); 9 grandchildren: Blake, Tyler, Amber, Hannah, Noah, Sarah, Rachel, Reilly and Jack; and 2 great-grandchildren: Nehemiah and Eleanor. He is preceded in death by his parents, George and Betty Dowling.
Ron was born on November 19, 1944, in Montgomery, Alabama, and lived there until he graduated from Lee High School in 1962. He later became a proud graduate of Auburn University with a double major in music and science. He served 4 years in the United States Navy. Ron was a devoted husband, and proud father and grandfather who loved his family. He loved God and was never ashamed of his faith. He was a respected music educator and musician across the state of Alabama, with a career that spanned nearly 40 years teaching band in Selma and Montgomery. His legacy of excellence and belief in the best of every person lives in the hearts of hundreds of former students and band directors who were impacted by his teaching, mentorship, and friendship. He loved talking to all kinds of people, writing music, playing his trumpet in jazz bands, fixing things, science, watching movies and Auburn football.
The family rejoices that Ron is now completely healed and making music in Heaven.
Funeral service will be held Monday, December 11, 2023 - 11:00am at First Assembly of God, 135 Bell Road, Montgomery, Alabama, 36117. Burial will follow at Greenwood Serenity Gardens, 909 Lincoln Road, Montgomery, Alabama, 36109. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service.
