Phillip Rawlings Obituary

RAWLINGS, Phillip Ould passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 25, 2026.  The son of the late Jesse Meredith Rawlings, Jr. and Lillian Rossell Rawlings, Phillip was born June 14, 1945, in Montgomery AL and spent his childhood in McComb, MS where he graduated from McComb High School.

Phillip graduated from Auburn University with a bachelor’s degree in architecture. Phillip served several years in the United States Army in Frankfurt, Germany, where he met his wife Gloria of 51 years, He returned to Montgomery and spent his entire career at Sherlock, Smith, and Adams, Inc. as an architect and interior designer on projects throughout the world.  His career included military projects, schools, hospitals and he especially enjoyed his relationship with Alberto Izzo & Partners, SRL in Naples, Italy.  He was a member of AIA, IDA, and ASID, serving as president of the Alabama chapter in 1997. He received numerous awards for his excellence in interior design at military installations.

Phillip loved the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts and served on the Art Auction selection committee for many years and chaired the committee several times. As a member of Phantom Host, he was selected as King Montala XLV. 

Phillip had zest for life with a warm, engaging, and caring personality.  He befriended everyone. Phillip and Gloria loved travelling with friends and family. Their most recent excursions included Croatia, Serbia and the Amazon.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Phillip Ould Rawlings, Jr. and his twin brother, Ray Davis Rawlings. He is survived by his wife, Gloria Derrick Rawlings, and his brothers Jesse Meredith Rawlings III (Sharon), James Whitney Rawlings (Carol), Rankin Revel Rawlings (Elizabeth), and sister Susan Rawlings White (Randy) and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held in the Memorial Garden of Church of Ascension, at 11:00 AM. on February 28, 2026 with visitation at 10:00 AM in Ascension Hall. Memorials may be made to Church of Ascension (315 Clanton Drive, Montgomery, AL 36104) or to Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts Sculpture Garden. (1 Museum Drive, Montgomery, AL 36117)
