Michael Luckett Obituary

Mike was a loving husband, proud father and grandfather, and successful stockbroker. He is survived by his wife Laura Cates Luckett of Montgomery, children Michael Luckett Jr., Ellen Luckett Baker (Justin) and granddaughters Eva and Laura Baker, all of Atlanta, Georgia. Born in Maryland to Lucile Thomas Luckett and Raleigh Harlow Luckett, he moved with his family and sister Catherine to Decatur, Georgia, then Birmingham, Alabama where he graduated from Ramsey High School. He earned a degree in business from the University of Alabama, where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. In 1966 he married Laura Cates of Montgomery, Alabama. Mike found many lifelong, close friends at work for Robinson-Humphrey, then Smith Barney and Stifel. Mike never met a stranger and was successful in business because he genuinely loved talking to people and learning their life stories. His generosity of spirit extended beyond his family and friends to his community where he served on many boards, including the Industrial Development Board of Montgomery and as president of the Boys and Girls Clubs of the River Region. He was a generous donor to many community organizations, including the River Region United Way and the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts. He was also an enthusiastic supporter of Alabama football and a member of the Booster Club. An eternal optimist, Mike’s favorite expression was “Everything’s made for love.” After suffering with prostate cancer, he died as he lived—with love, determination, and humor. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, March 15 at 2:00 pm at Church of the Ascension with visitation following.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Boys and Girls Clubs of the River Region, P.O. Box 234, Montgomery, AL 36101 or Church of the Ascension, 316 Clanton Avenue, Montgomery, AL 36104.
