Mary Dean McDavid, age 81, was welcomed into the loving arms of her Heavenly Father on April 25, 2026, surrounded by family she cherished so deeply. Born on July 2, 1944, in Montgomery, Alabama, Mary was the beloved daughter of George C. “Bo” Dean, Jr. and Estelle Eddins Dean.
Mary graduated from Sidney Lanier High School in 1962 and went on to Auburn University where she earned a degree in early childhood education in 1966, beginning a lifelong calling to teach and nurture children.
She met the love of her life, Ben McDavid, while attending youth group together at First United Methodist Church in Montgomery. Their shared faith and friendship grew into a beautiful marriage that began on June 4, 1966. Together they raised three children and built a family rooted in love, laughter, and devotion.
Mary began teaching while living in Atlanta during Ben’s years at Emory University, but her most lasting impact was made at John T. Morgan Academy in Selma and Trinity Presbyterian School in Montgomery. She taught generations of students, often welcoming the children—and later grandchildren—of former pupils into her classroom. Her influence extended beyond students to fellow teachers, many of whom she mentored with patience and grace. In recognition of her incredible legacy, she was inducted into the Trinity Presbyterian School Hall of Fame in 2019.
Mary’s faith guided every aspect of her life. A devoted member of First United Methodist Church in Montgomery, she served joyfully through Bible School, Lenten luncheons, and multiple Sunday school classes. Her servant’s heart was most evident in the quiet, consistent love she gave to family, friends, students, and even her beloved pets—whom she adored as fiercely as her children.
As a young girl, Mary dreamed of becoming a Rockette and spent many hours devoted to ballet. Though that dream found a different expression in life, her family takes comfort in knowing she is now dancing freely, whole and joyful, on Heaven’s streets of gold.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents and her loving sister, Ann Dean Rogers.
She is survived by her loving husband of almost 60 years, Ben McDavid; her children, Colleen (Todd) Atkinson, Cullen (Jenny) McDavid and Carolyn Queen; her sister Cyndi (the late Norman) Arnold; her brothers, Steve (Holly) Moody and James (Kathy) Moody; her grandchildren, Hannah Grace and Haleigh McDavid; Kate Atkinson; Penny, Joshua, Ja’Veon and Ja’Cam Queen.
A celebration of life service will be held on Tuesday, May 05, 2026 at First United Methodist Church in Montgomery at 11:00am with visitation beginning at 10:00am.
