Martha Houston

Martha Martin Houston, a long-time resident of both Montgomery and Eufaula, Alabama, and a native of Clayton, Alabama, died Saturday, March 14, 2026 at her Montgomery home. Mrs. Houston was the wife of the late Justice Gorman Houston, Jr., and is survived by her daughter Mildred V. Houston of Montgomery, and her daughters Katie Bratton (Bose) and children Bose and Millie (Raleigh, NC), and Martha Bonner (Stuart) and sons Stuart, William, and John (Charlotte, NC) and her son James Gorman Houston, III of Hattiesburg, Mississippi (Jeanne), and children, Gorman Houston, IV (Golden, CO), and Leesa Boykin Hollowell (Wes) and children Jane, Mary Neal, and William (Tuscaloosa, AL), her brother James L. Martin (Charlotte) of Eufaula, and her brother-in-law Billy V. Houston of Eufaula. Mrs. Houston was preceded in death by her parents Lucile and Arthur Martin, her sisters Lucile M. Smith and Clara Martin, her brother John West Martin, and her sister-in-law Celeste Houston.

Mrs. Houston was born on February 11, 1935, in Clayton, Alabama, and earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting at the University of Alabama in 1956. Mrs. Houston worked in education, banking, and real estate, and was an establishing partner of The Eufaula Agency. She was active in civic, community, business, and political endeavors throughout her life both in Eufaula and statewide. Mrs. Houston was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Eufaula, where she taught Sunday School and served in various leadership roles, including chairperson of the Administrative Board. At her death, Mrs. Houston was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Montgomery.

Mrs. Houston exhibited remarkable faith, courage, and intellectual curiosity throughout her life, and she served as a role model for many.

At her request, a family memorial service will be held at a later date. The family requests that memorial donations be sent to either the First United Methodist Church of Eufaula, 101 E. Barbour Street, Eufaula, Alabama 36027, or the First United Methodist Church of Montgomery, 2416 West Cloverdale Park, Montgomery, Alabama 36106.
