Keng Lieu Lao, born May 18, 1948, passed away after battling cancer at her home in Montgomery, Alabama on Monday, July 3, 2023. She is survived by her husband Mieng Chiep Lao; 5 daughters Suzanne (Ting To) Lo, Kristine (Larry) Jelley, Julie (Stanley) Lim, Hong (Matt) Murray, Yong (Hunter) Davis; 7 grandchildren Nicole Jelley, Allison Lim, Jessica Lo, Kathryn Lim, Jamie Lo, Camden Davis, and Annie Mei Murray. She is also survived by 4 siblings: Lieu My Thien, Lieu Tong Hui, Lieu Pui Hui, Lieu Ip Keng.
She owned three restaurants (Bamboo Garden, Emperor’s Garden, and Asia Bistro) over the course of 30 years in Montgomery, Alabama. She was known by several of her customers as “Madame”. In her spare time, she enjoyed chatting with loved ones, sewing, and shopping. She loved cooking curry and making Bao during family gatherings…she made sure everyone was well-fed, She had an infectious laugh, always finding humor in everything…she’d laugh so hard that she would tear up. She had a positive outlook on life. She always encouraged her kids to work hard and be independent. She spent the past 7 years enjoying retirement with her husband by traveling and taking care of their grandchildren.
During the last moments of her life, she was surrounded by 16 close family members, who toasted with a 30 year old bottle of Dom Perignon in celebration of her life. Her transition was peaceful and filled with love.
Visitation will be held on Friday, July 7, 2023 from 10 am to 12 pm at Magnolia Cremations & Funeral Services, 901 South McDonough Street, Montgomery, Alabama 36104.
