It is with an extremely heavy heart and deep sorrow that we share news of the profound loss of Bro. Johnny “Check” Gipson, Jr. He transitioned peacefully on Thursday, December 18, 2025, in a local hospital. Johnny Wayne Gipson, Jr. was born on December 07, 1958, in Snowdoun, Alabama, and was the first of ten children born to Johnny and Rosa Gipson. Johnny was affectionately known to many as “Gip,” “Pooroller,” “Booger,” and “Check.”
At an early age, Johnny was baptized at Southside Church of Christ in Montgomery, Alabama. Later in life, he relocated his membership to New Harvest Church of Christ, where he remained faithful until he was called home by the Lord.
Johnny graduated from Jefferson Davis High School in 1977, where he was actively involved in campus life. Shortly thereafter, he proudly served his country by enlisting in the United States Army, completing eight years of honorable service.
On March 20, 2002, Johnny united in marriage with Tammie Coleman, and together they established a loving and devoted home. From this union, they were blessed with one son, Takorious Gipson, affectionately known to his father as “Shorty,” the joy and pride of Johnny’s life.
Johnny followed in his father’s footsteps and began a lifelong career at Sunday Dinner, now known as US Foods, where he worked faithfully and diligently for forty (40) years. After decades of dedication and hard work, Johnny retired on October 31, 2024. He completed his earthly labor on Thursday, December 18, 2025, when he answered his Master’s call.
Johnny cherished time with his family and found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He enjoyed watching football with his family, fishing with his son Corey, and sitting in his yard engaging in meaningful conversations. He especially enjoyed talking with his mother, Rosa Gipson, whom he lovingly called “Granny.” Johnny also loved watching westerns with his son and taking long drives together. With his wife Tammie, he delighted in watching game shows and going out to eat at their favorite restaurants.
Johnny was preceded in death by his beloved father, Johnny Gipson, Sr., and both sets of grandparents.
He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted and loving wife, Tammie Gipson, and his loyal son and sidekick, Takorious “Corey” Gipson, both of Montgomery, Alabama; his precious mother, Rosa Gipson, of Montgomery, Alabama; siblings: Faye Comer (Rodney), Napoleon (Mary) Gipson. Curtis Gipson (Sandra), Joy Smith (Calvin), Craig Gipson (Pat), Brian Gipson (Angela), Jason Gipson (Sharon), Wade (Peppi) Gipson, all of Montgomery, Alabama; Sammy Gipson (Marion) of Freeport, Florida; along with a nation of devoted nieces, nephews, cousins, extended brothers and sisters-in-law, other relatives, co-workers, and friends, including the UAB family and the US Foods family.
Johnny also leaves to cherish his memory of devoted friends Haggai Harris, Joe Reynolds, Melvin Bibb, and many others too numerous to name.
