PAYNE, Johnny James a resident of Montgomery, Alabama passed away Tuesday, December 23, 2025 in a Birmingham, Alabama hospital. Johnny James Payne was born on June 12, 1961, in Elmore County, Alabama, to the late Andrew Payne and Lena Payne. He later moved with his family to Pine Apple, Alabama, where he spent much of his childhood, and later to Snow Hill, Alabama. Those early years helped shape his strong values, work ethic, and deep appreciation for family and community.
Johnny attended W. J. Jones High School in Pine Apple, Alabama, graduating in1979. Shortly after, he made the decision to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. Johnny honorably served for eight years, including service during the Gulf War. His service allowed him to travel the world, experience different cultures, and form lifelong friendships. He carried his role as a Marine with pride, integrity, and discipline throughout his life.
Johnny met the love of his life, Joyce. From their union were born four children, Myeshia Payne, Jasmine Payne, Morrissa Payne, and Johnny James Payne Jr.
Being a father was one of Johnny's greatest joys. He was a steady and loving presence in his children's lives, offering guidance, encouragement, and unconditional love. He later found great happiness in being a grandfather and cherished time with his grandchildren.
Johnny was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew Payne and Lena Payne, and his brother, David Payne.
He leaves to cherish his memory his four children; his beloved grandchildren, Shandaria Payne, Jeremy Brantley, Frederick Williams, Anteria Gilliam, Kayden McDonald, Alajah Williams, Nehamiah Payne, and Avery Williams; and his remaining living siblings, John and Mary Lou Payne, Andrew Payne, Joe and Lena Albergo, Gregory and Vivian Williams, Mark and Catherine Greenwade, Phillip Payne, and Derek and Annie Culver, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. The family of Johnny James Payne sincerely thanks Montgomery Fire E Rescue, all medical staff including but not limited to Baptist South Medical Center and UAB Medical Center for their care and compassion. We also extend our gratitude to Robinson ES Associates Architecture and our community members and city council R. Mitchell for their prayers, support, and kindness during this difficult time.
