John Gibson Obituary

GIBSON, John Phillip, of Lapine, AL., passed away peacefully, at home, in the early dawn on October 25, 2024. John was born on October 30, 1951 to William "Bill" Gibson and Virginia Hollis Gibson of Savannah, Georgia.  He was preceded in death by both his parents, a sister, Tillie Virginia  Berg and a grandson, Conor P. Gibson.

John is survived by his wife, Carolyn, three sisters, Wanda Davis, Patricia Pritchett, Susan Heath and one brother, William "Bill" Gibson, Jr., two sons, Christopher and Tyler, a daughter, Sandra "Nicki" Gibson, four grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews, and great nieces and great nephews.

After high school graduation in Savannah, Ga., John enlisted into the U. S. Army, where he retired in 1992.  He was a dedicated crew chief of a 'huey' helicopter.  The next 10 years he spent in Explosive Ordinance Disposal were very important to him, also.  John also retired from the State of Alabama.  John could do anything mechanically, having an innate understanding of how things work.  He could do anything with his hands.  This was his Gift.  He always thanked his dad for teaching him so much.  John's hobbies included welding, building, sailing, fishing, hunting, and flying. He also enjoyed traveling.

John braved pancreatic cancer for two years.  He fought a very hard battle  without complaint. His family would like to express their gratitude to his doctor and care team at the Montgomery Cancer Center, and his primary care doctor. They were all  wonderful. As were the medical staff at Grandview Hospital in Birmingham and Baptist East Hospital in Montgomery.

As we extend our deepest condolences to you and your family during this difficult time, we would also like to express our upmost gratitude to you for entrusting us with your loved one. Magnolia Cremations & Funeral Services.
