John Durr, III Obituary

John Wesley Durr, III, died peacefully at home on November 18, 2024, after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 89. John was preceded in death by his parents, Anne Paul Goldthwaite Durr and John Wesley Durr, Jr., and his sister, Anne Durr Palmer (Howard). He is survived by his beloved wife Mary Anne. He is also survived by his children, Palmer Perkins (Jim) and Paul Durr, and her children, Mary Vicki Logan (Bruce), Tipper Tipton (Erin), and Martha Elrod (Ben). He is also survived by eight grandchildren: Sarah Finlen (Ryan), Jenny Albright (Eric), Davis Logan (Emily), Anne Catharine Curtis (Joseph), Mary Stuart Crane (Landon), Hayden Tipton, Will Elrod, and Jack Elrod; and six great grandchildren: Collins, Laurel, and Jack Finlen, and Wesley, Wade, and Brady Albright. 

John was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama. He attended Vanderbilt University on a Naval ROTC scholarship, where he served as track team co-captain his senior year. Upon graduation, he entered flight school and became a Naval aviator (helicopter). He later flew fixed wing in the Alabama National Guard. Following his naval service, he moved to Montgomery and worked at Durr Drug Company. He later served as a board member of Durr-Fillauer, Inc. He started Data Solutions and Services and worked there until he retired. He was active in numerous civic organizations in Montgomery and Lake Martin.

John enjoyed playing tennis and golf and spending time outdoors, especially time at the lake. He loved his family and extended family, and was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and dear friend to many.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, November 24, 2024 at 1:30 PM at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Montgomery, Alabama. Visitation will precede the service at 12:30 PM in the Fellowship Hall.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Lake Watch of Lake Martin, PO Box 425, Dadeville, AL 36853, or any veteran organization.
