Janny Siegers Obituary

Janny Jeannette Siegers was born on March 23, 1939 in Wieringen, Netherlands and remained a Dutch citizen throughout her life. She died peacefully on Thursday, February 5, 2026. Jeannette came to Montgomery, Alabama in 1967 and initially lived at the Grove Court apartments (now on the National Register of Historic Places). Three years later she moved to the Cloverdale/Idlewild area. She had several homes in that part of town over the decades, all within a 1.5-mile area—she loved that part of Montgomery.

She cherished her neighbors, her neighborhood, and the many independent businesses in that part of Montgomery (shout out to Fennel & Figs, Stonehenge Gallery, Marcia Weber Art Objects, Capri Theatre, …the list goes on). She was good friends with a number of local and regional artists and had a keen interest in all art forms. The fine arts were a lifelong interest for her.

Jeannette attended Huntingdon College for many years in the 1970s, especially enjoying photography (she would develop her own film), painting and the musicals performed at the Down Funky Street Coffeehouse. She took courses that interested her, eventually graduating in 1978 with degrees in Art, Religion and Philosophy. Huntingdon held a special place in her heart throughout her life in Montgomery. She had longtime friendships with many of the professors and staff there.

Early in her career she worked on a European cruise ship and as an apartment manager. The majority of her professional life was spent at the Montgomery Public Library’s main branch on Lawrence Street, where she retired as Head of Circulation.

Jeannette loved art, PBS, museums, art galleries, books, scones, window shopping, the Capri Theatre, calendars, Dutch cheeses and chocolates, and of course, cats. Her kindness, compassion, love, and generosity toward cats could not be overstated. She fed, housed, and looked after many felines over the decades. Their caretaking was somewhat of a calling for her. One lone dog, her dear Spuds, also entered her world for about 15 years.

Jeannette is survived by her two brothers, Meint Siegers (Aafke) and Herman Siegers; her two children, Rolf Siegers (Anita) and Mara Lashley (Daniel Urquhart); and grandchildren Hannah Siegers, Emily Siegers, Dylan Siegers, Ryan Lashley.
