James Eugene Martin, 71, a native of Birmingham, Alabama, was born on August 13, 1954, and passed away on May 5, 2026, in Union Springs, Alabama. He graduated from Woodlawn High School and later earned college credits. He served in the United States Air Force for 4 years as an Aerospace Propulsion Specialist. He was the son of the late Eugene and Rosa Lee Martin and grandson of the late James and Idell Martin.
James was employed as a Grounds Maintenance Worker at Forest Hill Cemetery in Birmingham, Alabama, and, more recently, as a Forklift Operator at Bonnie Plant Farm in Union Springs, Alabama, for 10 years. James was an avid reader and was a lifelong learner. He enjoyed numerous hobbies and pastimes, including playing his guitar, playing dominoes, and playing cards. He loved to dance privately, listen to Motown’s Temptations, and other “Old School” music.
He was also known for his trademark cowboy hats, boots, tailored suits, and love of style and fashion.
From his youth, James had a deep love for the Bible and learned why it was so important to apply its truths in everyday life. Later, he dedicated his life to Jehovah and was baptized as a Jehovah’s Witness on December 14, 2002. Among the many blessings he experienced, James especially enjoyed sharing what he learned about Jehovah with others. He was preaching shortly before his death.
James will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 18 years, Wilimina Martin. He is survived by his siblings, Rosalind Martin Bray (David), Sharon Martin Smith, Robin Idella Martin, Ernestine Henderson, and Gloria Henderson; stepsister, Virginia Parker; uncles, Odell and John Martin; aunts, Janice and Flora Martin, and special niece, Rasheeda Lynn Martin; step-children, Vermetha (Ricky) Polite of New Haven, CT; Vincent (Adrianna) Seabrook of Jacksonville, FL; Kevin (Sonia) Seabrook of New Haven, CT; Latoyla (Ali) Atkinson of Opelika, AL; grandchildren, Aaron Washington, Cerie Seabrook, and Kale Atkinson, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, great and great great-nieces and nephews, in-laws, dear friends and all whose lives were touched by his kindness, humor, and faith.
He was predeceased by his sister, Lanita Gail Martin; his stepbrother, Benard Parker; his uncle, Samuel Martin; and his aunts Sylvia and Barbara Martin.
