James Maddox, III Obituary

James Elisha "Gene" Maddox III, 74, of Wetumpka, Alabama, passed away peacefully on September 1, 2024, surrounded by his family. Born on June 8, 1950, in Atlanta, Georgia, Gene lived a life full of love, laughter, and kindness.

He was married to his beloved wife, Ellen (Leni), for 54 wonderful years, and together they built a close-knit family rooted in love and shared experiences. Gene is survived by his son, James “Jay” E. Maddox IV (Brittany of Panama City, FL), and his daughter, Joanie Maddox Cobb (Sam Cobb of Destin, FL). He was a proud grandfather to Emerson Brook Maddox, James E. Maddox V, Collins Elizabeth Maddox, Samuel Brackin Cobb III, Maddox Elizabeth Cobb and Tyson James Cobb.

His family was his pride and joy. Gene grew up with a love for all sports, with a deep devotion for his Atlanta Falcons and Braves, Georgia Tech Yellowjackets, and the Auburn Tigers. He was passionate about cheering on his favorite teams, traveling with Ellen and living life to the fullest. After serving in the U.S. Navy, Gene went on to earn his degree in Recreational Therapy from Georgia Southern University. He later dedicated his career to helping others, working at Camp ASCCA (where he first met lifelong friends Chris and Tracy Archer) and serving in various roles for the State of Alabama Department of Health. Raising his family on the serene shores of Lake Jordan, Gene found great joy in boating, spending time with family and friends, watching football, and grilling out. His home was a place filled with warmth, laughter, and unforgettable memories. Gene's later years were spent between the lake and the beach, visiting his children and grandchildren who adored him. Gene is also survived by his sisters, Lucille E. Blanchard and Virginia Alexander, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents James E. Maddox II and Hubert Y. Rayburn and his niece Leighanne Alexander. Gene’s legacy of love, kindness, and joy will live on through his family and the countless lives he touched. A celebration of Gene’s life will be held later in 2025.
