PAYNE, Helen L. of Montgomery, Alabama, passed away on October 14, 2025, while at home surrounded by family. Guided by love, rooted in faith, inspired by grace, and filled with humility, Helen L. Payne was the embodiment of the words dedication and caring.
Mrs. Payne was preceded in death by her parents Dave and Veola Love; brothers Dave Love, Jr. and William Love; and sisters Lucy Williams and Callie Love. Helen was a loving and caring wife and mother who touched many lives with her effervescent personality, radiant smile, and caring spirit.
At an early age, Helen accepted Christ at Hill Street Baptist Church and years later she united with First Congregational Christian Church, United Church of Christ, where she was a faithful member until death. She served as a choir member, Usher, was instrumental in listing the hymn numbers each Sunday in the Sanctuary, updated the marquee on the church marker, and filed church music in the choir room. She was a member of the Women’s Fellowship and participated with the Senior Ministry. Her energy was inspiring, even when she was ill. In the end, her body slowed down, but her spirit never did.
She leaves to cherish her memory her husband of 48 years, Marcus Payne; one sister, Veola (Zedrick) Berry of Lithonia, Georgia; three daughters, Erica, Pamela, and Yvette Payne of Montgomery, Alabama; eight grandchildren, Tiant, NeVaeh, Trinity, Cedric, Salayah, Arthur III, Jemiya, and Jakari, all of Montgomery, Alabama; one great-grandchild, Jakaylenn; three nephews, Zedrick Berry (Shimah) of Georgia, Hardris Williams III (Alana) of Wisconsin, and Terry Williams of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; four nieces, Kerry Jefferson (Juan), Kenyata Langston (Carlton) of Georgia, Jennifer Williams and Lakisha Williams of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; a host of great nieces and nephews, cousins, relatives, and church family members; and special friends, Marsha Gonzalas Sewell and Valerie Boyd.
