Gnann Moser Obituary

On the morning of October 19th, Gnann Moser peacefully went to rejoin her Heavenly Father surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Born in Jacksonville, Florida, on September 21st, 1949, Gnann spent her formative years in Valdosta, Georgia, until her junior year of college when she transferred from Valdosta State College to the University of the South, where she became the University’s first female graduate in 1971. Gnann also received a master’s degree in English from Valdosta State University before she found her vocation in teaching. Gnann began her career in Savannah, Georgia where she would meet Gary Moser. The two married in Valdosta, where they would eventually settle and have two children, Marie and Ellis. Gnann would spend the rest of her career in the English Department of Valdosta High School, where she would not only eventually serve as department head but would also pioneer the development of VHS’s AP English Language program and earn the Georgia Council of Teachers of English “Teacher of the Year”. Gnann’s deep commitment to her students and fierce love of her craft touched countless students, and her unwavering support resulted in a beautiful reciprocal bond. Her students have honored her by naming her STAR Teacher five times, allowing her to be present at college signings, and on one notable occasion, being able to travel to Cornell University.  In further recognition of her contributions, the Gnann Alvarez Moser chapter of the National English Honor Society at Valdosta High School was established.

Gnann was a lifelong member of Christ Episcopal Church where she served as a lay reader and a contributing member of the Stitchers’ Guild.  She held multiple positions during her tenure as a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, and she was a longtime member of Valdosta’s Literary Guild.

Gnann is preceded in death by her mother and father, Grace and Laurence Alvarez, her older sister Sue Jacoby, and her beloved Abyssinian cat George. She leaves behind daughter Marie Brownhill, son Ellis Moser, daughter in law Jennifer Moser, and grandchildren Grace Moser, Eli Moser, Isaac Moser, William Brownhill, and Matthew Brownhill.
