Geraldine Curry born in Ramer, Alabama to Lemly Curry and Mandy Isabell Huffman, number six of 18 children grew up on a farm in a tight-knit hard working family. She obtained her basic education in a one room "Little Red Schoolhouse. Attending church with her family, caring for and working with her siblings was critical to her development.
As a young adult, she moved to Dothan, AL with her sister and worked as a hotel maid. There she married Equeller Garrett where they parented two children. In 1951, she relocated to Miami working as a live-in domestic on Miami Beach which required a special pass at the time.
Geraldine leveraged her God-given gifts and abilities in many roles throughout the years including as a domestic worker, restaurant cook and server, saleswoman at J.B. Hunter, cashier at 54th Street Drugstore, kindergarten and daycare bus driver, and other jobs. She took on every job and role with the same vigor; worked hard and gave her best to every undertaking. As a proud homeowner, she was active in the community by volunteering at the election polls, and as a long-time member of The Historic St. John Institutional Missionary Baptist Church in Miami.
Her work and contributions to her church are noted in many areas. She served in ministry as an usher, missionary, prayer warrior and served on many committees. For years she could be found in the fellowship hall on Sunday morning making breakfast loved by the congregation. She loved helping and did not have to be asked to pitch in where needed. Well-known for her soulful culinary skills, perfected while working on Miami Beach and as a cook and server at a popular restaurant in Miami's Overtown. Many customers, church family and loved ones raved about her delicious pies. Highlighted in an article in the Miami Herald, the community affectionately called Ms. Curry the "Sweet Potato Pie Lady".
Geraldine was blessed with two more children whom she nurtured and fully supported in all their athletic and other endeavors. They provided great comfort to her after the tragic murder of their father, Marvin Anderson.
Ms. Curry was the proud mother of four children, twelve grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and two great great-grandchildren, who affectionately call her "Mama Gerrie". Some of her favorite things were Search Word Puzzles, Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, watching Venus and Serina play tennis, Bible Study and anything purple.
Despite living far away from her childhood home, Ms. Curry never missed a family reunion in Alabama which started in 1967. This was her favorite time of year where she could gather with her mother, siblings and other family under the Big Oak Tree. For years she iced fresh fish and hauled it to Alabama for the annual fish-fry. Ms. Curry proudly served as a host for the 51st Curry Family Reunion in Miami in August 2018. She attended her last in-person reunion in Alabama, August 2019 and virtually in 2020-21. She took great pride in her family!
