CARLETON, Carolyn B. , 80, was received into Jesus’s arms August 20th, 2024. She was born December 19, 1943, to Laura Frances Owens and Grover Truman Breckenridge. She married Rhon V. Carleton on Friday the 13th, August 1965.
Carol began college in Munich, Germany, completed her undergraduate degree at Memphis State, and earned her Master’s degree in Special Education from Alabama State University. During the 1980s, The Department of Defense employed Carol to teach Social Studies and History in both England and Japan. In the 1990s, she taught the GED program at Maxwell Federal Prison and later at Trenholm State. While Carol adored all her students, her greatest joy was experienced working with mothers on welfare teaching GED courses at Saint Jude’s Literacy Center. Many of her students continued to keep in touch with her after completing the program with heartfelt notes and delightful phone calls. “Miss C” (as her students called her) was a treasure and will be missed. She is preceded in death by her son, John Christopher Carleton, and both parents.
She loves and leaves behind two daughters, Jennifer Carleton Empey and Heather Carleton Brock; three grandchildren, Ian Carleton Empey, Harper Carolyn Brock, and Stratton Hayes Brock; and one great granddaughter, Frances Bear Empey. A Memorial service will be held at Frazer Methodist Church on September 28th, 2024 with visitation at 1:00 and service at 2:00.
